Studio

Resolved before it is built

An interior design studio in Shah Alam, working on homes, offices, cafes and small hospitality around Kuala Lumpur. We finish arguing about the plan while it is still a plan.

01

Where we started

Geco began in 2021 as two people in a rented unit in Shah Alam, drawing kitchens for friends who had bought their first homes and could not get a straight answer out of anyone about what the work would cost. The answer was usually a number with no drawing behind it, which is another way of saying it was a guess.

We are nine now and the projects are larger, but the complaint that started the studio has not changed. Most of what goes wrong in an interior goes wrong before anyone lifts a tool — an unresolved layout, a finish nobody priced, a deadline agreed to in a chat thread.

02

Resolved before it is built

We finish deciding on paper. Layouts are tested against how the space actually gets used — who cooks, who works late, where the prayer mat goes, whether a pram fits past the shoe cabinet — and the finishes are chosen, priced and scheduled before a contractor is appointed.

It makes the design stage slower than clients expect and the build stage much quieter than they expect. A change on site costs several times what the same change costs in a drawing, and it costs the schedule as well as the budget.

03

How a project runs

Three stages, and you can stop after any of them. Clarity works out what to build, Create draws it to the point a contractor can price it without guessing, Build carries it through to handover. Each stage includes the one before it, so nothing is paid for twice.

Most homes come to us at Create. Cafes and offices, where a fit-out date is already written into a tenancy, usually take Build.

04

Who is actually on site

The person who drew your joinery is the person who checks it. We do not hand a finished set of drawings to a site team that was not in the design meetings — the details worth protecting are exactly the ones a stranger to the drawings will value-engineer away first.

We are not a contractor and have no plans to become one. We tender the work to builders we have used before, review what comes back line by line with you, and then hold them to the drawings. Being paid by you and not by them is the whole point.

05

What we take on

Homes, workplaces, cafes and small hospitality, mostly within an hour of Kuala Lumpur. Renovations more often than new builds, and we are comfortable with older stock — a 1980s terrace with a wall in the wrong place is a better brief than a blank floor plate.

We do not take styling-only work, and we turn down projects where the layout is fixed and only the surfaces are in question. That is decorating. It is a reasonable thing to want, and we are the wrong studio for it.

The people

Working with us

Enquiries usually arrive with a floor plan and a rough budget, and that is enough to start. If you are not sure which stage your project is at, say so — that is what the first conversation is for. Write to hi@gecostudio.co or send a brief through the form.
